Tasks & Penalties
Daily vs. Selectable tasks
Every positive task is one of two types:
- Daily — available once per day. Good for routines: brush teeth, make bed, homework.
- Selectable — available anytime, and can be completed multiple times a day if it makes sense. Good for things that vary: "Extra reading," "Helped a sibling," "20 minutes of exercise."
You'll see this labeled on each task in the Tasks and penalties card (e.g., "Every day · All kids" for a Daily task, or "Selectable" for a Selectable one).
Mandatory tasks
Administrators can mark a Daily task as Required. When a task is required:
- It shows a "Required" badge to both you and your child.
- Your child's screen time — both the live timer and Log Missed Screen Time — stays locked until every required task for that day has been submitted and approved by a parent.
- This resets each day.
Use this sparingly, for the small number of things that genuinely should always happen before screen time (e.g., homework). Turning it on shows a confirmation prompt, since it's an easy setting to forget you've turned on.
Dollar-value tasks SCREENPLAY FAMILY
On the Family plan, you can add a dollar value to a task alongside its point value. Set it above $0 and your child can choose whether to earn points or money for that specific completion — it's an either/or choice, not both at once. Leave it at 0 (the default) for a normal points-only task. Not available on the Free plan.
You'll see this as the "Dollar value (0 = points only)" field on the task's edit screen, with a note: "Enter a dollar amount > 0 to let kids choose between earning points or money for this task."
Managing your task list
In the Tasks and penalties card:
- Filter by Positive / Penalties, and by Active / Inactive.
- Sort by points, ascending or descending.
- Edit or Delete any task or penalty at any time — nothing here is permanent, and changes only affect future submissions, not history already recorded.
- Deleting a task doesn't erase your kid's past history for it — approved submissions keep their original title and point value on record.
How Screen Time Works
The timer
When your child redeems points for screen time, a full-screen countdown timer starts. When time is up, it locks the device and plays an alert. A parent PIN is required to dismiss the timer early.
Missed screen time
Forgot to start the timer? There are two ways to account for screen time after the fact, and they work differently:
Kid-submitted (needs your approval)
Your child can log screen time they used without starting the timer. This goes into your Pending submissions card just like a task — no points are deducted from their balance until you approve it.
Parent-logged (instant, no approval)
From your child's card on the dashboard, tap Log Missed Screen Time to deduct points directly yourself — for example, if you noticed after the fact that they were on a device without asking. This applies immediately, no approval step, since you're the one logging it.
Both respect the same balance rules as the live timer — if your child has rollover on and is at zero or negative, screen time stays locked until they earn their way back above zero.
Reviewing & Approving Submissions
Your Pending submissions card shows everything waiting on you — task completions and missed-screen-time requests from your kids.
- If your child submits several tasks in one go, they appear together as one card, but each task still has its own Approve / Reject button — you can approve some and reject others from the same submission.
- Use Approve All on a card to approve every task in it at once, when everything looks good.
- Rejected tasks don't earn points; your child can typically try again.
Applying Penalties
Unlike tasks, penalties don't need approval — a parent applies them directly:
- On your child's card, tap Apply Penalty.
- Choose from your existing penalty list.
- Confirm — points are deducted immediately.
By default, your child gets a notification when a penalty is applied. You can turn this off family-wide in Family settings → Notify kids when a penalty is applied, if you'd rather they simply notice the change in their balance.
Your Kid's Balance & the Leaderboard
- Both you and your kids can see a Leaderboard ranking siblings by weekly points — a bit of friendly competition. (If you only have one child, the leaderboard is hidden.)
- Carry over balance each week (set per child when you add or edit them) determines whether their points roll into the next week or reset to zero — see the Quick Start Guide for the full breakdown of how this works, including what happens with a negative balance.
Analytics
Tap Analytics on any child's card (or the "This week: X pts · Y min" summary line) to open a detailed view for that child:
- Screen Time chart — a day-by-day breakdown of minutes used this week, with Prev/Next week navigation. Days with 120+ minutes are flagged so you can spot a heavy day at a glance.
- Weekly History — a scrollable list of past weeks; tap any week for the full breakdown (points earned, penalties, bonuses, screen time, starting/ending balance).
Free plan: Analytics history is limited to the last 2 weeks. Trying to go further shows a lock icon and an upgrade prompt.
ScreenPlay Family plan: unlimited history, no restrictions.
Weekly History (Dashboard Card)
Separate from the per-child Analytics screen above, your dashboard's Weekly history card gives a quick overview across all your kids at once, and lets you choose how many weeks to display:
- Tap the week-count selector (1 through 12) at the top of the card.
- Free plan: only 1–2 weeks are selectable; options 3–12 show a lock icon and open an upgrade prompt if tapped.
- ScreenPlay Family plan: all 12 options are available, and your choice is remembered the next time you open the app.
Family Settings
Found in the Family settings card (administrators only for editing):
- Week starts on — Sunday or Monday, applies to all kids in the family.
- Daily submission bonus — an optional toggle that awards bonus points to a child for submitting at least one task on a given day, regardless of approval outcome. Set the bonus point value alongside it.
- Notify kids when a penalty is applied — family-wide toggle, on by default (see Applying Penalties above).
- Family unlock PIN for child timer dismissal — the PIN used to dismiss a child's screen time timer early. Enter a New parent PIN, confirm it, and tap Save parent PIN.
Notification Preferences
Each parent controls their own push notifications independently — this only affects your device, not anyone else's:
- Task submitted for approval
- Screen time started
- Screen time ended
Toggle any of these off if you'd rather not be pinged for that event.
Managing Caregivers
Invite other parents or caregivers (co-parents, grandparents, babysitters) from Family settings:
- Every family gets one parent account free (you, the person who created it).
- Adding a second or additional caregiver requires the ScreenPlay Family plan — tapping Invite a caregiver beyond your first free spot shows an upgrade prompt.
- Each caregiver is either an Administrator (full access — manage tasks, kids, settings, other caregivers) or a Standard caregiver (can approve/reject submissions and view everything, but can't change settings or manage the task list).
- Your caregiver list shows each person's name/email, role, and status — a newly invited caregiver shows as pending until they accept.
